Inter-city rivalry
The rivalry can be regarded as a manifestation of that which already existed between the two cities since the days of industry. During this time both were competing for supremacy in the north-west, with Manchester famous for his production skills, while Liverpool was famous for the importance of its port. Once the Manchester Ship Canal was built, ships could bypass Liverpool and transport of goods directly to Manchester. This has resulted in losses of jobs in the port and the resentment of the local population of Liverpool. Both crests of Manchester United and Manchester City to view a ship representing the channel. At the end of 1970 and 1980, the two cities were in decline due to the decline of industries. The domain of Liverpool FC at this time gave their fans something to cheer about, but led the locals feel their discomfort Manchester team were going through one of the worst periods of history. Since then both cities have once again grown and found success with Manchester now recognized as a world class city. Recently, Manchester hosted the Commonwealth Games 2002, while Liverpool was awarded the title of 2008 European Capital of Culture.
