Hooliganism

With the rise of hooliganism in English football in the years 1970 and 1980, matches between the two clubs made some major and minor incidents of hooliganism. Since then, the modern game has seen a decrease in violence between rival supporters and accidents are rare. This is probably due to an increased police presence and CCTV with important measures taken to keep the fans part. Until now, both sides still hold resentment towards each other.

In 1996 the Cup final, an unidentified fan spat at Liverpool Eric Cantona and threw a punch to the team winner Alex Ferguson at Manchester United climbed the steps at Wembley Stadium to receive the trophy from the royal box.

After an FA Cup match in 2006 between the clubs, the ambulance carrying Alan Smith, who had broken his leg during the match, was attacked on his way to the hospital by Liverpool fans.
